History & Status of the Fishery
Lake Mary is a 209-acre recreational development lake located two miles north of the City of Maple Lake in central Wright County. Lake Mary is a lightly developed lake in a rural setting. It is adjacent to Wright Countys Ney Park. Mary Lake has a maximum depth of 102 feet and water clarity of 4.8 feet. The lake has 2.3 miles of shoreline and 40% of the lake is considered littoral. Since Eurasian water milfoil was discovered it has now become abundant and was found on 95% of plant survey transects. This was the first survey since 1998.
Since 2002, walleye fingerlings have been stocked every other year in Mary Lake. Walleye fry were stocked in 1999 and 2000, without apparent success. The catch rate for walleye was below the normal range for similar lakes and less than the rate observed in 1998. Walleye ranged in length from 14 to 20.5 inches.
The catch rate of northern pike was above average compared to similar lakes, and unchanged from 1998. Northern pike ranged from 18 to 35 inches with an average length of 25 inches. Seventy percent of northern pike were 24 inches or larger. Growth of northern pike was above statewide averages. Female northern pike reached 24 inches in four years, whereas males reached 21 inches in four years.
Largemouth bass were sampled by evening electrofishing in mid May. Largemouth bass were captured at a rate of 52.8/hour. This was near the average catch rate for the Montrose Area. Largemouth bass ranged in length from five to 20 inches, with a mean length of 12 inches. Growth of largemouth bass was similar to the statewide average. Largemouth reached 11 inches in four years.
Yellow perch abundance declined significantly from 1998. The average length of yellow perch captured was less than six inches.
Bluegill trap net catches were greater than that of 1998 and were higher than the average value for similar lakes. Overall, bluegill ranged in length from 3.3 to 8.4 with an average length of 5.6 inches. Bluegill growth was near the statewide average. Bluegill reached 6.7 inches in four years.
The trap net catch of black crappie was below the range of expected values for similar lakes, but similar to 1998. Black crappie sampled by both gill nets and trap nets ranged in length from six to eleven inches with an average of 7.5 inches. Growth of black crappie was near the statewide average. Black crappie reached nearly eight inches in four years.
