I find it quite interesting that Hayfield Lake is listed. I was raised in Desert Center, a few miles east of Hayfield Lake, 1939-1948. I drove to high school at Thermal, just south of Indio. I remember that in about 1944 or 1945, Los Angeles was looking for a place to locate a water storage lake like Lake Mathews near Riverside. The area adjacent to Hayfield pumping plant seemed ideal. Heavy equipment showed up and worked several weeks to clear a wide swath of desert landscape. Then, the giant water pumps went into action, gradually filling what became Hayfield Lake. For the travelers on the near-by highway, it was a mirage. I saw that beautiful lake as I travelled to school. Then, one day, it was gone. The lake was gone. It was said that a sizeable hole opened in the middle of the lake. and it drained into an underground river or aquafer. Many tears later, I drove by on what is now, I-10. Hayfield Lake was and is a desert. No fishing allowed.
