Silver Dollar Area Ontario
5/21/04 @ 11:46 AM
Just interested to see if anyone fishes this area of Ontario. My group will be making it's 12th trip to the area later this summer. We stay at Moose Creek Camp about 8 miles north of Silver Dollar. We fish a number of different lakes in this area. Some of our favorites are Wintering, Sowden, Sturgeon, Young and Watcomb. I would enjoy comparing ideas and stories with fisherman who have spent time in this area. JEP

First comment here in a few years. Was able to read all of ya'll's comments but couldn't get mine to post. Red tape of the internet and my ignorance toward sorting thru it! Was up at Young Lake June 8-14 with a group of 13 this year. Stayed at Ignace the night, June 7, headed up about noon to check in and ran into the washout on 599. A detour around home is 5-10 miles, this one 150 miles. lol...Weather was okay, a couple light rains while fishing, one light rain overnight. Nights were cool, 45 degrees for lows. Water temp on Young and Watcombs stayed consistent thru the week 58-60 degrees, Pepperbell around 63 the one day out there. Water levels were average, up a foot to foot and a half from last year. Fishing was typical, good eater size walleyes, a few 18 -22 inchers. Northerns were similar, Kept our limits of 24-27 1/2, had a fair few of 28-36 inchers. Nice shoulders on the Northerns that we kept...Last year, saw an amazing show of Northern Lights on our last night up there. Was Thursday, June 14 or 15. Started at about midnight so all the guys were in bed already for the ride home. lasted over and hour, it was better than any fireworks ever seen...Shoutout to 14ftdn, a text he sent me this morning directed me to the new site, whereas I must have been on an obsolete thread the past few years...Also a shoutout to the engineers of society, hope you all rot in hell for causing me to miss out on 3 years of my favorite place on Earth.
We were near the Silver Dollar from June 6-10. Compared to when I was up there for this year's opener, the water level was higher. In fact, Andrew from the Silver Dollar said Sturgeon Lake was up 12"!
The warmest water temp I saw was 63 Fahrenheit. Walleye fishing was good where we found them, and were in 10-16 feet of water. The grouse were drumming to beat heck. One little bugger was drumming at 11:00 PM!

Report from June 1 to June 8th. Water level was slightly below average, but then we got rain several days. Water temps started the week at 56F temp, few times found 61F temp. Fishing for Walleyes was a challenge at times, rain several days, 15 mph winds made it hard to fish certain spots, cold front on Wednesday. Most of the time Walleyes would lightly grab the bait, occasionally a good hard bite. We kept trying different baits and colors, fished hard. Best memories of the week, fishing in a cold windy day and my kids and wife never complained.
Guidedfishing,
I did not go through the causeway. I boated up to it, but did not go through it..As far as the road to the boat landing, a good part of the road has been widened and gravel has been added. Logger's perhaps? The last mile from the corner/cutoff to the lake is good. By no means a freeway, as there are still some rough spots along the way.
I would have no issue driving my pick-up to LOB with my boat and have seen it much worse. The landing on prospect is good, with a washout near the water, but nothing you cannot get around.
Good luck if you make it there!

Dodger,
I was up in the area for opener and fished different lakes. The water levels were lower that what I am used to, but it did not impact me or my group at all. For context, I've seen the water levels much lower in other years. We fished Lake of Bays a couple days, and the channel between Prospect and Lake of Bays was deep enough to motor through. The warmest surface water temp I saw was 53 degrees.
I am leaving for the Silver Dollar area this Thursday (6/6/24), and will likely be fishing Lake of Bays again. I can update you with water temps and water levels when I return to the states next week. As an FYI, the area has been getting some rain, where I am optimistic the water levels may have remained unchanged.

rnel,
I know what you mean about the wind! Sunday the 19th was the hardest wind I've experienced up there. We fished the lakes near the Silver Dollar, and got pounded. Fortunately, we did okay, and boated some nice walleyes.
The wind was predominantly coming from the southwest on that Sunday. I could not have imagined being on Sturgeon unless I was on a boat the size of a cruise ship.

We had two days of no fishing, to windy. Probably the windest day i seen up there, no chance for trolling motor to hold. Even in a smaller bay. Fishing overall not the greatest, biggest Northern 41 inches cabin next door had a 45. A few 25 inche walleyes and tons of smallmouth. Weather had big say where we could go, so that is way fishing was down.
Yeah, I love to fish but the four letter word snow is one of the main reasons I no longer do the Ontario opener. Had some great fishing but also can remember one to many times having to shovel snow out of the boat, or subfreezing temps which kind of takes the fun out of it. I have found in addition to June trips that my August and early September trips are typically very comfortable weather wise compared to the opener and Memorial Day type trips. But hey any day fishing is a good day!
