Lake Bronson State Park

Situated in Kittson County, Minnesota, Lake Bronson State Park welcomes its visitors with aspen-oak forests accompanied by an interspersed prairie. It is spread over an area of thirty-five thousand acres with a man-made reservoir built to resolve drought issues in Kittson City as the area didn’t have any natural lakes in 1937. Today, it is open for the general public without any membership requirements and hosts millions of visitors annually. It offers a range of water recreation activities for its visitors along with an opportunity to observe the beauty of the prairie and forest lands.

Lake Bronson State Park is a perfect family vacation spot for nearby residents of North Dakota, Minnesotans, and South Canada. Camping sites with a water body are always a fun option because you can enjoy so many water-based activities including fishing, swimming, canoeing, and even water skiing. During the winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are also enjoyed by guests visiting the park. A visitor center at the park also provides visitors relevant information about the lands and its history.

Lake Bronson State Park features many hiking and biking trails for the more adventurous outdoor enthusiast that want to take on this rugged landscape. Guest who prefer a more relaxing camping experience can also choose to lie on the sandy beach area, or engage in the many recreational activities offered by the park including bird watching, boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, historic sites, kayaking, photography, picnicking, playground, swimming, volleyball, water sports and wildlife viewing.

Driving

Lake Bronson State Park is located just two miles east of Lake Bronson on County Highway 28. Getting to the park takes you through a pleasant drive across a prairie landscape and once inside the park gravel roads lead to the park office, picnic areas, camping sites, beach area and various other facilities. The boat launch and ramp area also allows ample space for campers and RV enthusiast to back-in their boats and enjoy the lake waters.

Reservations Camping
Lake Bronson State Park Campgrounds

Lake Bronson has a total of 162 campsites including drive-in sites, pull-through sites, electric sites, backpack sites, canoe sites and a group camp. These campsites are divided into three campgrounds that offer amenities such as showers, flush toilets, vault toilets and dump stations. Lakeside, Lakeside Extension and Two Rivers Campground offer a total of 67 electric sites with 20/30/50 amp electric hook-ups. They are also six pull-through sites available for reservation. For a more secluded camping experience three back-pack sites are located along the river that runs through the center of the park and offer a ton of privacy and a more rugged camping experience. The group camp is an enclosed shelter that accommodates up to a hundred people at a time and can be reserved for large gatherings. Access to drinking water and vault toilets are available next to the group camp that also has an enclosed shelter for dining and tent and pop-up camper sites for camping. A canoe site located on Moose Island on Lake Bronson offers the ultimate in privacy and quick access to river and lake waters. All camp sites must adhere to park regulations including quiet hours that start at 10 p.m. and end at 7 a.m. Generator use is also prohibited during this time.

In-Season
Hiking Trails

Many hiking trails and scenic byways cross across Lake Bronson Park that range in length and difficulty. During summer time these trails have abundant fauna and flora. Hikers can often spot a vast array of wildlife, especially migrating and local bird species that reside within the trees and vegetation by the lake waters and aspen park lands. Lake Bronson State Park is home to an abundant species of wildlife including deer, sharp-tailed grouse, sandhill cranes, black bear and wild elk that can be spotted by keener eyed hikers on the trails.

Geocaching

Lake Bronson State Park is a geocaching checkpoint that attracts many visitors to the park. If you don’t have the GPS units, you can borrow them for free from the park office. Geocaching is a great learning experience for modern day explorers and especially children. Geocaching is a must do activity, especially if you are with kids, it can be interesting to teach them how it works and see their fascination when discovering hidden treasure caches.

Fishing

Anglers can enjoy fishing on the placid lake waters and can pick up all the fishing equipment they need from the park office. Lake Bronson has a healthy fish population with many species such as walleye pike, northern pike, large and small mouth bass, and perch. Two fishing piers are also available for fishing use.

Off-Season
Observation Tower & Visitor Center

Lake Bronson State Park has the largest observation/water tower in the Minnesota State Park system that offers breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape and wildlife. The park also features historic WPA-Built structures. The visitor center is also available for rent any time of year and is a perfect outdoor meeting spot for family reunions, gatherings and meetings. The visitor center also has an attached kitchen for food preparation and service.

Picnicking

Lake Bronson State Park has several picnic spots allocated across the park. These spots are facilitated with picnic tables and playgrounds that make these picnicking sites especially fun for smaller children as they can enjoy the rides while the parents relax and take in the weather and views. The picnic areas also have fire rings and firewood is available for purchase at the park store. If you fancy a BBQ grills are available at picnic sites in case you didn't bring your own. Guests can have a great time cooking outdoors with their families in the pleasant weather while enjoying the scenic beauty of the lake, woods and prairies.

Cross Country Skiing

During winters, snow sports including cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are organized on park premises. The summer hiking and biking trails are transformed to cater to cross-country skiing enthusiast with trails groomed to a perfect four-inch base. These trails wind through the woodlands and over look the lake offering amazing winter views of the prairies. Snowmobile users must have complete registration and appropriate safety equipment to use trails. Snowmobile trails are not groomed but still provide a comfortable snowmobiling experience.
