Deer attacked my Pup

Strange but true. I was walking my 8 month old French Brittany pup "Kenny" in the woods by my house last week along with our Australian Sheppard "Buzz". We usually make a circle each day of about a half mile. Kenny came past me and went off the trail and over a small hill about half way around and disappeared from my sight. Moments later he started yelping and crying like crazy and I started running towards the sound. As I got over the hill he was about 30 to 40 yards away in the ferns and I could see leaves and ferns being kicked up but could not see what was happening other than he was yelping and I knew he was getting hurt by something. I finally got close enough and saw a Doe attacking him with her hooves. I still could not see him but knew he was trying to get away because everything kept moving and the Doe was kicking and thrashing in a fury. I was yelling at Kenny and then at the deer but she did not stop. I finally got about 15 yards from her and could see Kenny under some brush with her pretty much on top of him pounding with her hooves. At that point she stopped and faced me with her ears laid flat and I thought she was coming at me next. I started looking for a stick or something to defend myself with and about that time just on my right side "Buzz" flew past me and attacked the doe. He was all teeth and was barking right in her face. That stopped her and she backed away from where Kenny was. Buzz is a herding dog and continued to go after her until she finally ran about 20 yards away and stopped. Then I saw Kenny get up and run past me. Buzz stayed on her as she again tried to go after Kenny. Finally she gave up and ran off. Kenny was dirty but ok. Buzz is his hero now. Here is a pic of them. Obviously she had a fawn and was protecting it but I never did see it. I never thought a deer would be that aggressive.

1HAWEKEYE1-

I got him from Plum Creek kennels in South Dakota. He is now just over 2. Smart little guy but pretty wired and stubborn. Loves to hunt though.

We have been very fortunate with our three lab hound mixed pups, now a year old. Where we live we have quite a few does and fawns in our small area, have not had one yet get aggressive towards our dogs. Mostly it's the dogs barking and jumping that scare the deer off

Was just south of Iron River in the U.P on Friday and in the middle of HWY 55 comes a deer from the brush chasing and attacking a sheltie. Just crazy. Stopped traffic. A little dog was in the mix as well. 2 dogs and a deer in the middle of a busy road. A guy on a motorcycle and I just put our arms out like "Can't believe what we're seeing..."

Wife was planting flowers in front yard yesterday. Dog ran off porch and chased cat down driveway (500 ft.). Out pops for from woods and starts holding Natalie, a Cavashon about 15#. She is crying and starts running for home. Same time my wife runs screaming towards deer and dog. Half way back to house deer turned around and headed back in woods. Obviously as previously stated, fawn must be dropped near by. Natalie went from pursuer to pursuee in matter of seconds

Same thing as last year just happened in my yard. Kenny was walking near the woods line but in the yard area and a doe came out of the woods and started chasing him. He was a little smarter this year and she was not able to catch him. BUT- here comes Buzzy again and charged right into her face which stopped her. I have to wonder if this could be the same doe. She really gets pissed!! Once again no fawn seen. Buzzy the heroX2.

Have seen several Deer attacks to dogs on video and Kenny's lucky, they don't often end well... Great looking dogs!

I had Kenny to the vet this past week and one of the tech's there told me that they had a client who had their small poodle killed by a deer in June.

We've had a doe drop fawns just off our driveway the last two springs. Every time we walk our dogs down the driveway she appears and runs circles around the dogs, stopping often, sometimes within 5 feet or so of them. She has never actually attacked them. We named her "Dora the destroya" and have come to enjoy her antics.

The doe protecting it's fawn is quite likely. Never get between a mother and her young.
