How in the heck do you even start to choose which trout flieshttps://www.theflystop.com/fly-fishing-flies-discount/to buy? I looked through this list and now am completely confused by all the categories. Anyone have a basic explanation?

I had the same issue when I was starting out. I did some searching and found http://www.flydealflies.com . They have awesome pre-selected assortments that should make things easier for you! Hope this helps!

I use a muddy grubber or a beaded prince.

I agree with some of the other posts. Best bet is to go to a shop that specializes in Fly Fishing. In Milwaukee area it is The Fly Fishers on Greenfield, Madison Fontana Sports Specialties on the west side (not the downtown store), in Viroqua, The Driftless Angler, In Green Bay, Tight Lines in DePere. If you are going to the Fennimore area, call Jim Romberg (he is a guide but will sell you flies) at 60-822-3005. Some of Jim's patterns have been featured in Fly Tier Magazine.

Let me know where you fish and I can make some solid suggestions. I have been fishing the creeks of Wisconsin for 20+ years and now carry one fly box the size of a notecard in my shirt pocket for a majority of the streams in southern Wisconsin. Shoot me a PM.

So many flies. Yes. Depending on the time of year depends on the flies you need in your arsenal. Don't just buy one of each. you never know when you'll loose one and need another because it is doing so well for you. This should help you out http://www.flyfishingwis.com/html/wis_hatches_.html
