Nice video. How about the backwaters? Can I get a canoe back there or is it all iced over still in non/slow current areas?

Catch Catch in response to your question, as of yesterday there was still solid ice on the lower landing, but by March 1st it might be opened up where you could fish it from shore there even if the float isn't open. I brought the gopro along, and the bite was really good! Couldn't believe there was safe ice in the area still.

Last fall we planned an ice fishing trip out of La Crosse for next weekend (3/1/24). Not going to happen now but still coming to La Crosse.

Can we catch anything from shore? With waders?Perch walleye pike bass?

Ice is melting, so the spring perch madness can’t be too far off. I’m wondering if it’s possible to fish the perch run from somewhere other than below the dam. I’ll be trying to get Dad out again. He’s 81, and the best place we’ve found for getting him in and out of the boat is the French Island landing across from Copeland Park. I doubt he’ll want to be out more than a couple hours, so we won’t want to take the time to motor over to join the crowd at Dresbach.

I’m not looking for anyone’s honey hole; I guess I’m just asking about spring perch patterns. Either that or a suggestion for another launching point with something like the kayak platform on the Black River that has worked for us.

Fished for green and gold Sunday in La Crosse in attempt to cure my heartbreak from the green and gold...
Fish were finicky, but managed a meal worth.

Was able to get on the ice for a few hours this weekend and caught the fire out of gills and crappies! We had a hair over 2" of ice, which I think is probably get less by the minute. Caught everything on tungsten jigs with plastics.
