Montana Creek State Recreation Site

Montana Creek State Recreation Site is a popular camping destination located in the Susitna Valley along Montana Creek. This State-owned recreation site is a treasured fishing destination for many amateurs and professional freshwater anglers who visit the park in droves during the spring and summer months.

Apart from its thrilling bank fishing experience, Montana Creek State Recreation Site also offers excellent camping amenities and facilities for RV and tent campers alike. Other recreational activities offered at Montana Creek State Recreation Site include hiking, boating and picnicking on this picturesque river setting.

The park offers visitors the opportunity to rent and buy essentials from the stocked campground store in case they are running low on supplies. Fishing equipment and kayak rentals are also offered at the campground store.

This 82-acre state recreation site offers a scenic river setting amidst Alaska’s heartland and has something for every camping enthusiast. The large camping sites offer plenty of room and privacy, and is a must-visit for those traveling through Alaska’s Big Delta landscape.


Transportation

Driving

Montana Creek State Recreation Site is located on Mile 96.6 Parks Highway. To get their one must drive along Glenn Highway until it connects to George Parks Highway. Drive north until you reach milepost 96.6. You should see the park entrance on your left. The highway is wide and well-maintained so getting to the park in your large campers or RVs shouldn’t be a problem. Once inside, the roads leading to the various facilities and campsites are well-maintained dirt and gravel roads.

Montana Creek State Recreational Site Campground

Montana Creek State Recreation Site has a total of 36 campsites that are well-maintained and roomy offering plenty of space and privacy. The campsites are unfortunately not ADA accessible. However, they do come equipped with their own picnic tables and fire pit area.

The campground is also pet-friendly as long as they are on a leash or chain at all times. Generator use is prohibited after 11 p.m. and campers can stay for up to 14 days at a time. The campground is close to an enclosed washroom and shower facility as well as drinking water access.

The campground store offers all the essentials you need to have a comfortable and memorable experience enjoying the many recreational riverside activities offered at Montana Creek State Recreation Site.

In-Season
Fishing

By far the most popular activity at Montana Creek State Recreation Site is fishing. This riverside setting offers the ideal bank fishing grounds for anglers to fish for grayling, rainbow trout, dolly varden, king salmon, silver salmon, and pink salmon. The campground store offers all the supplies and fishing equipment you need to have truly memorable fishing experiences.

Hiking

Montana Creek State Recreation Site isn’t just for anglers. Novice and extreme hiking enthusiast can also have a blast trekking along some truly amazing nature trails that lead to spectacular views of this vast Alaskan landscape. The Mouth of Montana Creek Hike is for more novice hikers and runs along the Susitna River and the old railroad tracks. It is a short and pleasant hike.

The more adventurous and seasoned hikers can take on Luthman Trail a nine-mile round trip hike that leads to Montana Creek Falls. It offers hikers a challenging experience wading through raging streams, large boulders, fallen trees, and steep inclines. Upon reaching the falls the terrain opens up to reveal some truly majestic views of the upper Susitna Valley and the raging falls below.

Picnicking

With over 38 picnic sites available for day-use Montana Creek State Recreation Site is a highly entertaining day stop for those that want to escape to a romantic riverside setting. Whether you fancy a spot of fishing or want to spend the day relaxing by the river, Montana Creek State Recreation Site offers it all. Picnic tables are dotted around the site and are close to toilets, fire pits, and drinking water. Enjoy snacking by the river or walking along its banks.

Montana Creek State Recreation Site offers biking enthusiast the opportunity to bike along paved biking trails that go through underpasses at the George Parks Highway and over Montana Creek bridge. The bike trails are well-maintained and are a quick and exciting way to cover this scenic recreation site and its many wonders.

Dog Sledding

Dog sledding is a unique activity that can be experienced by visitors to the park during the winter months. The hiking and biking trails are transformed into dog sledding trails that are also ideal for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
